The D.S.B. aptly nick named the Spooky antenna came to be after much research, testing, (actually using other dipole designs). We also experimented with many different types of coax and wire.
Simple Balun for feed point to your D.S.B. |
Double Spooky Bazooka with a simple air choke balun |
Its been found that a half wave antenna is nearly the most efficient antenna you can operate.
Your new antenna will work in almost any configuration you can dream up. Mostly used in a horizontal fashion with a slight belly in the middle fed with your 50 ohm coax.
Be sure your coax is working as should before connecting to the D.S.B. As of to date the only reported issue found using this antenna has been an operator error using bad or poor quality coax.
Use your creativity by placing some weight on the ground side of your D.S.B. (marked with colored tape). Not too heavy, something like a quarter gallon full of a paint bucket works great. You can then attach para cord or some type of non-conductive rope attaching to the center of the D.S.B. and pulling back and tying off in a V type config. This will make the antenna more directional to the area of operation you like to use mostly. Remember this dipole is made with coax so don't pull your Spooky too hard (ha) when laying it out for flat side DX.
You can find many photos and images of this antenna on the internet. There is a DOUBLE SPOOKY BAZOOKA page also on Facebook.
Please be sure to provide some type of strain relief for your coax line connecting at the D.S.B. as not to strain your PL 259 connectors. You can simply make an air choke balun and tie some rope to it and wrapping onto the condulette of the D.S.B. (center feed section). Photos of this configuration are available on the web.
Don't forget you can slope this antenna with proven results as well. 35 degree slope works with ground side of course going to earth ground. Try to have your center feed going perpendicular to the antenna (T like). Your ground side will be marked with a colored piece of electrical tape rolled onto the coaxial phase line of one side of the Spooky.
Please enjoy this antenna with safety in mind. Do not come in close contact with power lines or wires that are already in place in your surroundings. When transmitting no one should touch the antenna at any time.
It's always best to check your SWR, even though your D.S.B. has been tested out before shipping to you. Connect your D.S.B. to your coaxial cable and do a test of your SWR for your location at about 10 feet up before going up higher. Remember this antenna works great and can be up and ready in just 10 minutes or less. (so don't waste time raising and lowering your antenna.) The idea is to get it in the air and let the magic begin of this proven DX killer. Try her out at just 7-11 feet from ground. You will be amazed at what she can hear from mother earth.
And remember it also works great as a Vertical ground plane antenna. Place the ground side of antenna with a slight angle of about 35 degrees for best performance has been found by many other operators of this super DX antenna. Don't forget to try it out Vertical too. Best performance has been with a slight angle of the ground side of antenna. Scott the maker of this antenna and sole builder has worked many long distance communication at just 3 feet from earth ground.
Best Wishes to you and family, and 73 ! Good DX

And for those who would like to order one you can see one available via ebay and shipping World Wide except for a few countries via a Global shipping program that ebay has implemented. If the shipping cost is too high let me know and I will see what I can do about reducing the W.W. cost. Most all in State Side its just $6.00.
